Smudging Instructions
A Gentle Ritual Guide by NessaStores 🌿🦋
Welcome. You’re here for a reason.
At NessaStores, we honor sacred plant traditions while supporting modern seekers in creating meaningful, intentional spaces. Smudging is a time-honored practice rooted in the Indigenous cultures of the Americas—used for generations to cleanse, bless, and restore balance.
This guide will help you approach the ritual with clarity, respect, and intention.
What Is Smudging?
Smudging is the traditional practice of burning sacred botanicals such as White Sage, Cedar, Sweetgrass, or Palo Santo. The aromatic smoke is used to symbolically clear stagnant energy, refresh a space, and support intentional living.
It is not a trend — it is a living cultural practice.
As an Indigenous Americas–owned business, NessaStores approaches this tradition with reverence and cultural integrity. We encourage all who practice to do so with gratitude and respect.
Choosing Your Botanical 🌿
Each plant carries its own traditional use and aromatic profile:
White Sage
Traditionally used for deep cleansing and resetting energy in a space.
Cedar
Associated with grounding and protection. Often used when creating sacred space.
Sweetgrass
Burned to invite positivity and blessings after cleansing.
Palo Santo
A sacred wood from South America known for its uplifting, woodsy aroma and mindfulness rituals.
At NessaStores, our bundles are thoughtfully sourced and prepared with care.
How to Smudge with Intention
1. Set Your Intention
Pause before lighting. What are you welcoming in? What are you releasing? Your intention guides the ritual.
2. Light the Bundle
Using a match or candle, light the tip. Allow it to flame briefly, then gently blow it out so it produces steady smoke.
3. Guide the Smoke
Fan the smoke around your body, your room, or your objects. Move slowly and mindfully. You may speak your intention aloud or hold it silently.
4. Use a Fireproof Dish
Always burn over an abalone shell, clay bowl, or other heat-safe dish. Never leave burning botanicals unattended.
5. Close with Gratitude
Offer thanks — to the plant, the Earth, your ancestors, or your higher self.
When to Smudge
You may feel called to smudge during:
• Moving into a new home
• Beginning a new chapter
• Before meditation or prayer
• After hosting guests
• Seasonal transitions
• Any time you wish to refresh your space
There is no “perfect” time — only intention.
A Note on Cultural Respect
Smudging originates from Indigenous ceremonial traditions. We invite you to practice with humility, awareness, and appreciation.
When you support NessaStores, you are supporting an Indigenous Americas–owned company committed to honoring these sacred plant traditions responsibly and respectfully.
